The most commonly encountered organic pollutants causing such effects are bacteria (0.2-5.0 μm3), mainly carried on the surface of dust particles, hence it is important that the cabin filter separates dust well and prevents bacteria from entering the car's cabin.

What is the cabin filter for?

In cars that do not have a cabin filter or where the air cleaning system is inoperative, the concentration of harmful substances is several times higher than at the roadside. The reason for this is the lack of free air flow as is the case outside the car, so that the interior becomes a settler in which dirt accumulates! A driver with tear-filled eyes, suffering from cough and runny nose attacks, not only exposes his health, but also becomes dangerous for other road users, because he gets tired faster and reacts more slowly to road hazards. Even ordinary sneezes can be dangerous, because the driver loses sight of the road for about 3 seconds. This is a dangerous situation, especially in a city where everything is happening quickly and fractions of seconds can decide if there will be a cullet. Late braking, late attention to the cyclist or pedestrian, imperceptible obstacles on the road are very risky behaviors, which the driver can not afford, because it risks the safety of other road users. The driver struggling with allergies also has problems with concentration, which can be compared to the driver who drives the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. In addition, long stay in a closed and polluted environment can cause health-threatening and complicated to treat diseases such as, for example, lung mycosis, it is particularly dangerous to transport small children in cars with inefficient filters and contaminated air-conditioning.

All this can be avoided by using modern cabin filters, and - most importantly - periodically replacing them.However, since the cabin filter has no effect on the operation of the engine, there are few drivers and mechanics who attach importance to the replacement of this element. Typically, the replacement takes place only in the event of blocking the filter to a degree that prevents the operation of ventilation, which results in the windows misting in the car, as if we were driving with closed air recirculation.

Replace the filter at least once a year.

In the normal use of the car, cabin air filters should be replaced at least once a year. It is best to do this during the spring car review. Thus, in the period of the strongest emission of plant pollen containing allergens, as well as dust generated during the summer heat, the filter will fulfill its basic task well. In the case of frequent movement on dirt roads, and in areas where pollination of air is much greater (A typical example is currently many cities where a smog alarm is announced) it is recommended to change the filter twice a year. In this case, this should be done in the spring, to reduce the amount of allergens coming in the spring and summer, and in the autumn which will reduce the penetration of suspended dust, causing the smog in the heating period.

The effectiveness of this type of filters can be seen visually, during their exchange. The surface of the filter is very dirty and this should give us some food to think about what would happen in our lungs without the filter. Fortunately, the purchase of a cabin filter is not a significant expense and for a small amount we have protection against solid particles. Standard filter

It is the cheapest and most widespread cabin filter. It is made of matched layers of cellulose fibers (filter paper) of varying thickness. In addition, thanks to electrostatic properties, the middle layer of electrostatically charged microfibers attracts even the smallest particles that can enter the lungs. This allows the reduction of particles much smaller than the pores in the filtration material (less than 1 μm). These particles flow with a stream of air through the filter, approaching the electrostatically charged fibers "stick to" them and clean air enters the cabin. This filter removes up to 100% of solid contamination such as soot, dust and dirt particles.

Activated charcoal filter

The cab filter with active carbon has all the advantages of a standard cabin filter, but an additional layer containing activated carbon absorbs harmful gases such as ozone, hydrocarbons and sulfur and nitrogen compounds preventing them from entering the driver's cabin.

In this case, the microfusion was used, which has much higher filtration efficiency than natural fibers (it removes solid contaminants in 100%, such as soot, dust, dirt particles, pollen and bacteria). Because individual fibers are much thinner than cellulose fibers (filter paper), the microfette has a much larger filtering surface while maintaining the same volume. In addition, it has a low hygroscopicity, which makes the filters do not deform under the influence of water as it could happen in the case of filter paper.

The most important feature of the filter, however, is the use of an additional layer of activated carbon. The layer of activated carbon-containing filter material is usually placed last and the air entering it is now free from dirt particles and other impurities. Active carbon (activated) is a substance consisting mainly of elemental carbon in amorphous (soot) form, partly in the form of fine-crystalline graphite. It is characterized by a very large surface area per unit of mass (500 - 2500 m2 / g), making it an excellent adsorbent for many chemical compounds (for comparison, one teaspoon of active coal has a football field surface).

From the point of view of the cabin filter, the method of applying activated carbon to the nonwoven layer is important. It is important that the carbon particles are dispersed evenly in the nonwoven fabric and that they are permanently fixed in it (they do not spill out of the filter).

The filters offered by Master-Sport used a high-pressure spray of active carbon, which is a significant technological advantage over the competition versions, in which mechanical methods were applied, placing the coal unstable and unevenly. As a result of the mechanical method, the filtration is uneven and there is a local lack of separation of harmful gases.

Filter with a layer of silver

This is another solution developed in cooperation with specialist doctors and adapted for production by Master-Sport engineers. The construction of a cabin filter with a silver layer is identical to that of the active carbon filter, only the last layer contains silver particles instead of active carbon.The use of particles of this metal in the filter results from the fact that the silver compounds are toxic to bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi, as do other heavy metals such as lead, copper and mercury. However, in contrast to them, silver compounds are not harmful to humans. These compounds kill many microorganisms. Reactive silver ions can change the structure of the cell wall and the nuclear envelope, disorganizing the bacterial cell. Silver also binds to bacterial DNA and RNA, denatures it and blocks replication

Filter with a bamboo layer.

Another filter in the cabin, developed in cooperation with doctors, engineers from material processing and Master-Sport specialists is a filter with a layer made of bamboo fibers. We have known for a long time that the roots and leaves of bamboo have a healing effect - compounds contained in them counteract the development of cancer, have action antibiotic and antioxidant. Studies by Japanese scientists have shown that also the skin of shoots of this plant has useful properties. As part of the experiment, the bamboo shoots extract was prepared and its antibacterial effect was checked. It turned out that it successfully inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. With the help of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, it was possible to isolate the compounds responsible for this action - stigmasterol and dihydrobrasicasterol.

This provided an excuse to start research in the Master-Sport laboratories on a new cabin filter, which as an absolute novelty will hit the automotive market.

It is worth noting that standard cabin filters reduce the flow of solid particles into the cabin and are now standard in every modern car. However, because people are more and more caring about their health, and additionally staying in cars more and more time, in the research and development departments of large companies such as Master Sport, filters are created by specialist doctors, which eliminate the impact of bacteria and prevent the emergence of diseases and cancers.
